Angling Lore by Striper Mike

FIRST EDITION

"My name is Striper Mike. You may feel that such a name is a pompous
assumption, especially in a community with such proficient anglers of all
types, with as many great stories and catches as myself and more. None the
less, the name was given to me by a local builder from Humarock...so I kept
it! The Lore part of my site will offer you a guarantee, that all the stories
and techniques are mine and true. I have been coming to Humarock for 19
years and 5 years ago, I bought my own part of paradise. I have been a
fisherman most of my adult life, I am 50...yikes old!..  Factually here are the
true fishing facts of my resume. I have spent treasured time with Greg
Beecher, the author of "Fish The Chair if You Dare". He was perhaps the most
renowned giant bluefin Captain in the area....I was part of 6 epic fish and
have the sagas and pictures to prove it.  I had years on head boats and
private yellow fin tuna charters and have caught over 100 yellow fins from
the thrilling stand -up posture. I have been part of 3 shark fishing videos and
once held the Conn. State record for a Blue Shark...408 lbs. on stand up
gear....and finally I am a passionate surf angler and have been on the
winning side of many big linesiders....many, many, many, of which , I
released after photos....So, concluding this first segment , I hope to have
many components to my site..tips...questions and answers....stories..photos
etc.....sincerely ..Striper Mike"

Ask Striper Mike

"What gear do I use to fish Humarock beach?"

We are fortunate in Humarock, to have the two bridges in the South River....The reason for my mentioning that, after a question concerning the beach, is because open ocean surf casting is not for everyone...actually, not for most people..The bridges offer more of an opportunity to catch a fish for many different reasons....most of which involve the fact that the body of water is more
confined and hence so are the fish.....If you enjoy many many casts with heavy gear....long night hours of waiting...frequent seaweed to tangle all of your gear...high surf....soaking wetness..and complete solitude....then email me for specifics on how to fish open ocean.....Social and successful are the two elements of bridge fishing that most anglers enjoy.

"When should I fish for stripers"

Here is an old saying....not necessarily true, but it has stood the test of time...."Wind from the west, fishing the best, Wind from the east, fishing the least"......also the traditional 2 hours before high tide and two hours after, will offer the angler the most water to fish in...this is important on the bridges...but essentially stripers will feed is the water is moving and not at slack tide.

"What should I do if I see someone with a "short" Striper?"

I am very very reactive to this situation. First I would ask if they knew the law concerning the 28" limit. If I was met with any resistance I would inform them that I am calling the proper authorities..This is a serious and vital law for the future of our great gamefish....I am also a very big advocate of catch and release....especially the very big bass over 36"...buy a camera...capture the moment, not the fish. Why would you release the biggest ones, you may ask?....email me and I will tell you.

Any more questions?...please send them to me...my answers are my opinions and may not be documented facts....sincerely Striper Mike

Fishing Update

This is what is known as the Fall Run, or similar titles, for the Striped Bass behavior at this point in the season. The Fall Run is also famous (take my word for it) for the size of the fish caught from the shore during this period prior to their annual migration to water with the temperature they desire. The reason is that the fish try to feed heavily before the exhausting migration ahead of them.....they do not feed during the swim south. Keep in mind that this area has a number of great fishing spots that dot our shores. Some of these spots are more famous for the size of  Fall Run fish than others.............which ones?...email me with your specific inquiries and I "may" answer them. Or you could go to our local bait and tackle establishment ...Ferry Street Bait and Tackle.. and ask Pete for some info. This is a personalized and needed business in our town and Pete is a wonderful owner. So, get out your pen and paper, here are some Striper Mike tips for the Fall Run. They may be the difference between heartache and elation. These are serious and big female striped bass. They will make a mockery of novice anglers and poor equipment.

Tip #1...Re-tie all the terminal tackle before each outing and after each big fish. Terminal  tackle is the set up from the end of the line to the end of the hook. The knots must be of approved strength. Email me for a personal palomar knot lesson.

Tip# 2...Use a new hook on each outing and resharpen after each bite. There are good pocket sharpeners on the market now. and finally...

Tip # 3 Be wary of the soft bite of a huge fish. Trophy Striped Bass are expert feeders. These huge fish suck in and expel the food at an alarming speed. They will give you what I I call "the soft bite." You should hold the rod at all times. Do not put it in the rod holder and expect the trophy linesider to swallow your hook. It does happen and those successes breed the laziness of the use of the rod holder. Waiting for the rod to bow, while in the rod holder, is one of the reasons why my numbers and size surpass the occasional shore anglers, where this practice is common place. Get your knots tight and hooks sharp and ask around for the Hot Spots. Email me with your Fall Run
Sagas...Good Luck, Striper Mike
